If you prefer a naturopathic way to treat your hay fever or other allergic reactions to grass, weed, and tree pollen as well as to dust mites and bee and wasp venom, immunotherapy may be used to weaken your body’s reaction to the allergen. Immunotherapy, also called desensitization, aims to make your immune system less sensitive to the causes of your allergy and thereby relieve the symptoms.
Immunotherapy is a process that can take up to 3 years. Very small amounts of an allergen extract are introduced to your body via injections, drops or capsules, which causes your body to produce antibodies to fight off the allergen. Gradually, the amount is increased as your body becomes more & more used to the allergen. In many ways, this is similar to being vaccinated against the allergen.
The treatment can be administered to both children and adults, but can’t be used to fight off every allergy.
Due to mild to severe side effects that can occur, consult with your doctor before beginning any immunotherapy treatment.
