Currently, eighteen states, the District of Colombia, and the US territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands have licensing laws for naturopathic doctors. The state of Wisconsin does not yet offer licensure for naturopathic doctors, so they cannot provide primary care, nor does Wisconsin have a legal definition or requirement for naturopathic practices. As a member of the Wisconsin naturopathic doctors association, we strive to provide accurate information to the public on the topic of state licensure. It is our duty as naturopathic doctors to support state licensure efforts to improve public safety and ethical standards for naturopathic doctors in currently unregulated settings.
As a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Nickels’ goal is to do no harm, recognize and promote the body’s natural self-healing powers, focus on the illness not just the symptoms, educate patients, treat the whole person, and promote preventative paths to achieve and maintain wellness. Dr. Nickels continues to educate conventional medical providers on the benefits of naturopathic medicine. She is held in high regard because of her education and clinical expertise. Conventional medical providers continue to collaborate with her to ensure natural supplements are working properly with other medications they prescribe and as a result, patients are receiving safer, more holistic treatments. Patients who previously hadn’t heard of naturopathic medicine are now seeing the incredible clinical results that changes in diet and lifestyle, paired with natural treatment options, can bring about.
